Connect performance, funding, liquidity and capital before approving a business decision. Explore the management framework, then open the relevant existing tool and review its assumptions and limitations.
A banking decision affects income, funding, liquidity and capital together. This laboratory brings these dimensions together to examine balance-sheet trade-offs and their consequences. It connects quantitative and risk tools with management questions.
The tools present educational scenarios and simplified conventions. A result alone establishes neither profitability, soundness nor compliance of an institution. A real decision needs reconciled data, a defined accounting perimeter and documented funding assumptions.

Review the same balance sheet through two complementary lenses. Net interest income measures earnings over a planning horizon; economic value measures the present value of asset and liability cash flows. Protecting short-term earnings can leave economic value exposed. An ALCO review should connect repricing buckets, deposit behaviour, basis risk and embedded options to the chosen hedge.
The duration approximation assumes a small parallel shift, stable cash flows and a common yield convention. It excludes behavioural changes, convexity and non-parallel movements. Compare NII and EVE scenarios on documented balance-sheet assumptions; neither is a liquidity reserve.

Build a dated sources-and-uses forecast: deposit flows, credit-line drawdowns, repayments, debt maturities, collateral calls and operating payments. Separate the planned funding requirement from a protective reserve for forecast error. Review idiosyncratic, market-wide and combined scenarios. Each available financing or asset-sale action needs an owner, lead time and execution constraint.
A projected inflow is not immediately available funding. Separate committed facilities, contingent sources, encumbered assets and sale proceeds subject to haircuts. Do not assume stress-market access or central-bank support. Reserve sizes and escalation triggers require bank-specific approval, not a universal threshold.

Use RAROC to compare relative performance and economic profit to measure value in currency terms. Reconcile accounting income to expected net earnings, including risk costs and documented adjustments. Compare activities on a common horizon and economic-capital method. A lower RAROC alone does not justify closing a positive-economic-profit activity; assess feasible alternative uses of released capital.
Economic capital depends on the loss model, horizon, aggregation and allocation convention; it differs from available and regulatory capital. Avoid counting the same capital cost in both net earnings and kEC. RAROC does not describe funding liquidity or tail risk completely.

Explain a loan quote through funding, operating cost, credit-risk compensation and margin. Document maturity, collateral, borrower quality and the wider relationship. The commercial committee reviews deviations alongside risk and finance. Trace the cost allocation and expected-loss convention before approving a pricing exception.
Cost-plus is a decision aid, not proof that the borrower accepts the quote or that the loan remains profitable under stress. The credit premium is not automatically expected loss. Explain treatment of uncertainty, capital costs and collateral before comparing quotes; avoid duplicate costs across FTP and business margin.

Translate strategy into business objectives and capital allocation; evaluate risk and economic profit, then revise allocation and strategy. Each decision records evidence, a responsible owner, approval and a review date. Operational control supports execution; independent audit assesses the control system.
For ALCO, record funding assumptions, hedging rationale, treasury execution owner and risk challenge. For credit, record borrower analysis, price deviations and approving authority. For capital allocation, record alternative uses and review economic profit. For operational incidents, name the process owner and verify closure evidence. This is an adaptable responsibility template, not an assertion about a bank’s actual organisation.

EVIDENCE AND CONTROLS
The integration plan should retain the strategic and financial objectives used to approve the investment. Separate business continuity from incremental synergies, while recognising that both rely on shared people, systems and decisions. For each initiative, define its owner, milestone, one-time cost, expected benefit and verification measure. A leadership summary should expose dependencies and risks across functional plans, rather than present a collection of disconnected schedules. Customer retention, operating capability and culture may matter alongside financial savings. Compare delivery with the original baseline, then explain changes in scope or timing. Benefits that were already included in standalone forecasts should not be counted again as synergies. Targets remain plans until supporting results are observed and reconciled.
Synergy targets remain plans until supported by reconciled delivery evidence. Benefits already included in standalone forecasts must not be counted twice.

DECISION FRAMEWORK
Revenue recognition and cash collection can occur in different periods. Read profit together with changes in receivables, inventories, payables and non-cash charges. Then distinguish operating cash from investment and financing flows. For a project or new activity, a dated cash plan should show the financing gap before income becomes cash. Runway is conditional on the assumed collection dates and spending profile; fresh borrowing may extend liquidity without improving operating profitability.
Decision: Match the funding plan to the cash gap. Data: Collection dates, payment dates, opening cash and committed financing. Control: Reconcile profit-to-cash adjustments and separate financing from operations.
Project-finance reasoning, not a substitute for a bank liquidity framework or a forecast based on live data.

EVIDENCE AND CONTROLS
Cultural integration becomes concrete when it concerns decision rights, working practices, language and employee expectations. Identify where the two organizations use different routines and where that difference could disrupt customer service or cooperation. Design communication and joint working around those dependencies rather than relying on a statement that the cultures are compatible. Respect for both organizations does not imply that every practice should remain unchanged. The integration plan must connect the desired operating model to responsibilities and observable milestones.
Decision: Decide which routines to retain, adapt or combine. Data: Decision rights, communication routes, working practices and staff feedback. Control: Assign owners and observe operational consequences, not culture labels alone.
Management mechanism, not a quantified causal estimate of merger success or a staffing/legal instruction.

A well-written control may still fail if it is not performed at the right time or on the right population. Assess design and execution separately: identify the risk the control addresses, then inspect evidence that it operated as intended. Keep exceptions, root causes and remediation owners linked to the original risk. Set a realistic completion date and an escalation route for overdue actions. A heat-map score supports prioritisation, but an ordinal rating is not a calibrated probability of breach, an expected loss or a capital amount. Re-test the corrected process before closing the finding.
Decision: accept the evidence or reopen remediation. Data: documented design, execution samples, exceptions, due dates and re-test results. Control: distinguish a designed control from a tested control; define score scales before aggregating them.
Qualitative control ratings are not monetary prices, breach probabilities or regulatory capital. No score-to-loss conversion is added.

BASEL / PRUDENTIAL FRAMEWORK
Capital absorbs losses; liquidity supports payment obligations; governance makes measures controllable. Read these dimensions together, with an explicit perimeter and date.
Identify eligible capital and adjustments, then credit, market and operational RWA. Counterparty exposures and CVA risk have specific treatments. Basic BCBS minima are 4.5% CET1, 6% Tier 1 and 8% total capital; buffers and additional requirements depend on the applicable framework.
Connect material risks, loss-absorbing capacity and capital planning to supervisory review. Stress scenarios, concentration and banking-book interest-rate risk are not reducible to a Pillar 1 ratio. Document decisions and challengeable assumptions.
Reconcile prudential measures, financial statements and published disclosures. Transparency requires stable definitions, traceable method changes and validated data quality. Comparisons across banks must account for perimeter and method differences.
BCBS standards are not, by themselves, directly applicable law. In the European Union, CRR3 — Regulation (EU) 2024/1623 — amends CRR; CRD6 — Directive (EU) 2024/1619 — amends CRD and requires national transposition. Operational interpretation must check consolidated versions, transitional provisions, the entity, consolidation level and supervisory decisions.
Surfaces vary two aggregates while all other inputs remain fixed. The 72.5% floor target is a fully phased scenario. A ratio increase caused by a lower denominator does not alone demonstrate improved resilience: explain it through exposures, methods and possible disposals.

Open seven tax demonstratorsCan identical nominal taxes have different discounted costs?
Brusov and Filatova make payment frequency and advance versus end-period timing explicit in their capital-structure models. The transferable insight is to date cash flows before discounting them. The demonstrator below isolates that timing effect for a fixed nominal annual tax budget. It is an original finite cash-flow illustration, not an implementation of the book’s perpetual tax-shield or BFO equations.
Proposed review: reconcile tax accrual, cash payment dates, usable deductions and the discount-rate convention. Compare identical nominal totals; distinguish a payment brought forward from a reduction in tax due.
No freedom to choose statutory due dates is assumed. Timing does not create a deduction or reduce the legal tax liability.

Which assumptions allow a financing tax benefit to enter valuation?
The book contrasts finite-horizon BFO formulations with perpetual limits and varies income and payment timing. These are model-dependent results. For a valuation review, make debt policy, taxable capacity, cash-flow risk, horizon and terminal assumptions explicit. Do not add a separately valued tax shield to cash flows already discounted at a rate that includes the same tax benefit.
Proposed deliverable: assumption bridge between an unlevered value, financing effects and a WACC valuation. Explain any difference before selecting a method; no universal superiority of BFO is claimed.
Constant capital weights, full usability of interest deductions and a single rate are restrictive assumptions. The book’s model results are not an empirical validation for a client.

How should a model result inform a distribution decision?
Chapter 22 connects tax burden, leverage, horizon and the modelled cost of equity to dividend-policy discussion. Treat that link as the authors’ analytical framework. A required return is not automatically a cash distribution: retained earnings, investment needs, liquidity, solvency and legal restrictions require separate review. A negative or declining model output needs interpretation, not automatic execution.
Proposed deliverable: distribution scenarios reconciled with available cash and investment commitments, plus documented decision gates. Keep the financial sensitivity and the legally distributable amount separate.
No dividend entitlement, authorised distribution or local corporate-law test is determined by this note.

Compare equal nominal annual payments at different dates. Synthetic monetary units (MU), flat effective annual discount rate, no tax assessment or BFO implementation. Initial values are illustrative.
A: fixed annual tax budget (MU/year); p: payments per year; n: whole years; r: effective annual discount rate (decimal). Each payment A/p occurs at t_j=(j+1)/p at period-end or j/p in advance, j=0,…,np−1. No growth, inflation, default, deduction limit or statutory instalment rule is modelled.
With a positive rate, earlier payment increases the present cost of a fixed tax outflow. This does not imply that tax deductions or an entire financed company have the same sensitivity. The dates are hypothetical; they are not selectable statutory deadlines.

Adapted from Kubiak (ch. 1–8), the CSSC manual (ch. 11–16) and WetFeet (case diagnosis). This is a proposed approach with no claimed engagement outcome.
DECISION FRAMEWORK
Begin each workstream with an acquisition assumption to test, not merely a list of documents to collect. Financial, operational and legal evidence should be connected where they affect the same value driver. For each material finding, record the evidence, remaining uncertainty, valuation consequence and decision owner. Distinguish an issue requiring resolution before closing from a negotiated contractual protection or a post-closing integration task. A missing document is an evidence gap; it is not proof that the underlying risk is absent. The final decision paper should disclose the quality of information, access restrictions and unresolved assumptions. Business and financial review can inform the deal case; jurisdiction-specific legal interpretation belongs with appropriately qualified counsel.
An evidence gap is not an absence of risk. This is a review framework; jurisdiction-specific legal conclusions require separate assessment.

DECISION FRAMEWORK
A business model links the client problem, value proposition, delivery resources, revenue and costs. Treat uncertain elements as hypotheses rather than as a finished forecast. Choose a small test that can challenge the most consequential assumption: who needs the service, whether they will pay, or whether delivery is feasible. Record the evidence and the decision to continue, revise or stop. A successful prototype is evidence about a defined test, not proof that the whole business will scale profitably.
Decision: Continue, revise or stop a defined proposition. Data: Client feedback, delivery cost, test population and acceptance criteria. Control: Keep tested facts separate from assumptions still untested.
Entrepreneurship framework adapted to project governance; not a banking authorization or a statistical causal test.

EVIDENCE AND CONTROLS
A post-deal review should revisit the strategic, financial and organizational objectives agreed before the acquisition. Include revenue and customer effects, not only cost reductions or headcount. Give the review access to both deal knowledge and perspectives outside the original team. Explain deviations before converting them into lessons for the next transaction. Past experience can inform a new deal, but differences in market, scope and operating model must be examined before reusing a conclusion.
Decision: Decide which lessons are transferable to the next transaction. Data: Original objectives, baseline, realized effects and explanations of deviations. Control: Include independent perspectives and distinguish coincidence from attribution.
Review process, not a proven performance effect. Review dates should fit the actual transaction; this text does not impose the book's illustrative calendar.

DECISION FRAMEWORK
Breakeven asks how much activity is needed for contribution to cover the fixed cost included in the analysis. First define the period, unit of output, net unit revenue, variable cost and fixed-cost perimeter. A positive contribution is essential: increasing volume does not cover fixed cost when each additional unit loses money. Use sensitivity analysis to challenge price, cost and capacity assumptions. The threshold is an operating planning measure, not a valuation, a liquidity guarantee or a bank regulatory capital requirement.
Reference relation and assumptions
Decision: Compare the threshold with feasible capacity and demand. Data: Net unit revenue, unit variable cost, fixed cost and period. Control: Keep cost perimeter and tax convention consistent.
Illustrative single-output operating model; not an implementation of economic capital or banking profitability.
